Surviving Character Assassination

Character Assassination: The malicious and unjustified harming of a person's reputation.

And no one knows that better than Spider-Man! Although the web slinger risks his life daily to rescue those in need, he is labeled by many as the bad guy. His critics do not shy away from spreading fake news that Spider-Man is a menace and a threat to society.

The Daily Bugle's relationship with Spider-Man is a great example of character assassination. Character assassination is different from disliking someone. It is the highest form of bullying. We all encounter people in life whom we dislike and that's okay. Once you discover that you do not get along with someone else, you can move on; avoid them if you have to. Character assassination is an active hate campaign against a person with the objective of having the people in your life turn against you. Examples are friends, family members, coworkers, and those within a community you are a part of. The goal is to ruin that person; to make them an outcast. Sadly in many cases, the hate campaign is successful. Only the foulest individuals dedicate themselves to persistently tearing another person down. Members of  hate campaigns often dedicate years to turning people over to the dark side.

How can you survive an attack of character assassination? Is it even possible to survive? The answer is:

The key to making it through a character assassination attack is self esteem. Self esteem is your body armor; your bullet proof vest. You have to know and believe that you are a good person. As long as you are happy with yourself and the person you are, nothing else matters. The only opinion that matters is your own, not what anyone else thinks of you.  Once you have achieved confidence, every encounter you have with a hater will become nothing more than humorous.

The path to self esteem isn't easy but can be achieved with hard work. You have to train your mind to focus on the positive aspects about yourself as a person. We all have at least one thing that we like about ourselves. That is where you begin. As each day passes, think of a second trait and then a third, fourth and so on. If there is something that you do not like about yourself or anything that you feel you need to improve on, make that your goal. Work towards it. It is never too late to change. You have the power to become the best version of yourself!

You  must realize that you cannot change the minds of others. This next step is about acceptance. When we are attacked, our instinct is to defend ourselves. Defending yourself is perfectly all right; I would never tell anyone not to defend themselves. However, please accept that not everyone may believe you when you plead your case. It's much easier for people to believe that you are the bad guy rather than admit that everything they heard and believe about you is wrong. Accept that some people may be eternally ignorant. I often say to myself: "Okay. Fuck you too." and move on because in the end, people like that don't matter and should not take up space in your life. You should not have to convince anyone that you are a good person. If they want to spend days, hours, weeks, months or even years  smearing your name, having you black listed, snubbed, etc,  then let them get eaten up by their own negativity. Trust me when I say, other people will begin to notice their uncontrollable hatred and will begin to wonder about their hate campaign against you.

After acceptance comes preparation. Unfortunately you have to be prepared that you may lose friends, and other people in your life. This can be the hardest step however you must learn to let people go. Those who are quick to trust rumor over their own personal experience with you and what they see with their own eyes, are not worth having in your life. Be thankful those people are gone because they trust the word of a character assassin over you. Those who stick by you will prove themselves to be your real friends.

What do you do when you encounter a member of the character assassin squad in real life? Take a deep breath, hold your head high and act like they don't exist. Be fierce in their presence. No eye contact, no snide remarks; treat them as if they are literally not there. Your hater doesn't matter

Don't ever let the attacks of a character assassin distract you from your daily life. Keep on living. Keep setting and accomplishing goals. Keep working towards being the best version of yourself that you can possibly be.

Self esteem.
Be fierce in the presence of your enemies.

These are the keys to surviving a character assassination attack.
