Justice League Advance Spoiler Free Review

On Monday November 13th, I attended an advance screening of Justice League in Philadelphia. The film will officially be released on November 17th. With a run time of 1 hour and 59 minutes, the movie is rated PG-13 and stars Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher and Henry Cavill. The films screenplay is written by Joss Whedon and Chris Terrio. It is directed by Zack Snyder. Joss Whedon according to reports, reshot 20% of the film

Official Movie Write Up:

"Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy."

Early reactions of this film have been quite consistent among fans. The consensus is "Fun. They got the personality of the heroes right. Good/okay story. Not great but fun."

My opinion? I actually agree.

Justice League is a clean break from the massively depressing and confusing atmosphere created in Dawn of Justice. The writing has greatly improved. I no longer feel like I am watching an alternate universe version of Batman or Superman. They are behaving as they should, as does the rest of the League. Batman's psychotic, murderous behavior in Batman VS Superman seems like a bad dream. He is truly changed in Justice League. Henry Cavill's Superman is finally written the way he should be. This. Is. Superman. Ezra Miller's Barry Allen is the heart of the film.  He is charismatic and genuinely funny; a joy to watch and root for. Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman doesn't seem to have progressed much since Dawn of Justice however, there is a great scene where she reveals her reluctance in becoming a leader. In battle she is a fierce warrior and continues to be a beacon of hope. Jason Momoa's performance as  Aquaman left me wanting more. I truly look forward to his solo film. I have personally never been a big fan of Cyborg. I believe he should remain on the Teen Titans and is not Justice League material. I personally would have liked to have Martian Manhunter and John Stewart on the team. Cyborg didn't bother me and wasn't bad. I personally am not a fan of the character. Ray Fishers performance was fine although I hope his CG improves in future films. As a team, the cast works beautifully when it comes to on screen chemistry.

Danny Elfman's score, particularly his classic Batman theme are a welcome return to a DC Comics film. Inserting John Williams classic Superman theme was just the icing on the cake.

I personally did not care for Steppenwolf as the choice villain nor his massively CG face but he is not the focus of the film. The League is the focus and that is how it should be. I strongly disapprove of Zack Snyder's choice to redress some of the Amazons in bikinis. This caused a huge uproar on social media over the weekend when an article was written on it by The Golden Lasso. I can confirm that when the Amazons go into battle, some of them are wearing full armor while others, sadly, are wearing bikinis. Because according to a male director, Amazons would totally go into battle wearing bikinis thus exposing their vital organs, yes? The armor and costumes designed in Wonder Woman by Lindy Hemming were perfection and realistic. I understand wanting to give the Amazons a different look for a different time period, but bikinis should not be one of them.

This movie was not better than Wonder Woman but it is better than Man of Steel, Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. What shocked me about this film was that it was FUN and humorous mixed with great action sequences. It was almost like the good ole' days when you watched Justice League Unlimited on the Cartoon Network. I can't reveal my favorite part of the film without revealing a  major spoiler however I can say that this film drew a very strong reaction amongst the crowd. Movie goers were laughing, clapping and shouting at the screen. This is due to Joss Whedons contribution to the film. Anyone who follows Joss Whedons work in film or television is familiar with his style. The scenes that he rewrote and reshot are easy to pick out. They were some of the best and his touch are what makes this film a highly enjoyable ride.  Warner Brothers and DC Comics literally brought in the only screen writer and director who has made a successful superhero team film and it was definitely the right move.

If you think you know everything about this movie, you are wrong! Scenes from earlier trailers have been cut, hints on social media prove to be nothing more than teasing and certain actors do not appear after all. This is most likely due to the rewrites and reshoots.

There are two after credit scenes, a first for a DCEU film  so please make sure to remain in your seats. The first one was my favorite as it was literally comics coming to life. I was not too thrilled with the second one. Attendees at the Philadelphia screening were given free posters. I was also given a free JL hat for wearing my Wonder Woman hoodie.

I highly recommend watching Justice League when it hits theatres November 17th. You will have fun!
